The compilation of new works on Fiqh

such as al-Fiqh al-Islami fi thawbihi al-jadid by Mustafa Zarqa' and al-Fiqh al-Islami WA adillatuh by Dr. Wahabah Zuhayli is indicative of a significant change in Sunni Fiqh.

The modern way of writing on Fiqh among Sunni fuqaha' and legal experts has certain distinctive characteristics the most important of which are as follows:

(1) It adopts the method of comparative study and takes into account the soundness of basics as the only criterion of ascertaining the correctness of views.

(2) It attempts to explain and simplify Islamic Fiqh so that lawyers can also get acquainted with its issues.

(3) It systematizes Fiqh in an academic manner and sets it forth in a form harmonious with modern legal issues and using new legal formulations.

(4) It applies specialization in Fiqh due to the difficulties in grasping the entire Islamic Fiqh by a single scholar of Fiqh.

(5) It has undertaken the task of the compilation of great and invaluable Fiqhi collections (Fiqhi encyclopedias), e.g. Mawsu'at al-Fiqh al-Islami (Encyclopedia of Islamic Fiqh), Damascus University (1986). Also the is the encyclopedia of Ibn Hazm named Mu'jam Fiqh Ibn Hazm al-Zahiri (1966) and Mawsu'at al-Fiqh al- Islami, whose compilation was initiated in Egypt by The High Council of Islamic Affairs under the title of Mawsu'at 'Abd al-Nasir in the time of Jamal 'Abd al-Nasir's presidency. Al-Mawsu'at al-Fiqhiyyah, whose compilation in Kuwait by Mustafa Zarqa' began in 1967. Certain authors on Islamic Fiqh have proposed the compilation of al-Mawsu'ah al-Fiqhiyyat al-Muwahhadah (The Integrated Encyclopedia of Fiqh).
